Student Athlete Expectations

When you join any of our WBMS teams, you're not just representing yourself, but also your team, coach, and school. We believe that being part of a school sports team is not just a privilege but also a responsibility—one that requires the utmost dedication and integrity.

At William Byrd, we take great pride in the conduct of our athletes, who consistently uphold the values and standards of our school community. However, we recognize that, on occasion, individuals may fall short of these expectations and violate our student code of conduct. Should such instances occur, it's crucial to understand that consequences will be enforced, both within the context of athletics and during regular school hours. We urge you to familiarize yourself with this guide and acknowledge your understanding of the commitment required to represent William Byrd Middle School as a Terrier Athlete by signing below.

1. Any student athlete who receives After School Detention must serve the hour prior to coming to any game or practice. The coach may assign consequences for missing time from a game or practice as he/she deems necessary.

2. Any student athlete assigned to In School Suspension (ISS) for a full day will be suspended from the next game but may participate in practice that day and the days leading up to the game. A student’s second offense resulting in In School Suspension will result in a meeting between the principal, athletic director, coach, parents, and student athlete will be held to determine whether the student athlete will remain eligible for participation. A third offense will result in dismissal from the team.

3. Any student athlete suspended from school will be suspended from at least two games and may face dismissal from the team. A meeting between the principal, athletic director, coach, parents, and student athlete will be held to determine whether the student athlete will remain eligible for participation. The second offense will be an automatic dismissal from the team.

4. Student athletes who are not meeting academic expectations may be assigned After School Detention/Study Hall, and coaches may assign consequences for missing time from games or practices.

5. Any student whose grades drop below a level where they would be considered ineligible to play under the VHSL rules may be suspended from athletic events until their grades are above the minimum requirements. The coach will have discretion to allow the student to continue to participate in practice while working with teachers to encourage academic success.
